Launch Pad

Launching in Spain

The Global Launch Pad for Spain sets out why Spain works as a European base (location, talent, startup ecosystem) and then walks through the practical side of establishing there: legal forms, foreign investment declarations, visas and residency, and tax incentives. It also points to the two organisations to know, Mavens and ICEX, and the main international tech events.

  1. 01
    Strategic location

Spain offers a strategic location within the European Union, providing access to a large market of over 500 million consumers through an extensive and modern network of air, sea and land infrastructure. It has two of Europe's busiest airports (Madrid and Barcelona), three of Europe's most important ports (Valencia, Barcelona and Algeciras), over 15,000 km of high-speed and conventional railways, and more than 17,000 km of highways and freeways.

  2. 02
    Talent

Spain has highly competitive and qualified human capital thanks to the quality of its education, and wage costs are more competitive than in other major European economies.

  3. 03
    A booming tech ecosystem

With more than 11,000 active startups and extraordinary investment numbers, Spain's technology entrepreneurship ecosystem continues to accelerate and strengthen its place among the most relevant markets in Europe. The ecosystem has two main hubs, Barcelona and Madrid, alongside other cities successfully fostering technology startups such as Valencia, Bilbao and Malaga.

  4. 04
    Legal and regulatory framework

It is advisable to seek legal and accounting advice from local experts in Spain to ensure regulatory compliance and efficient management of your business. Familiarise yourself with the Spanish legal and regulatory framework affecting your industry, including labour, tax, commercial and intellectual property law within the framework of EU rules, and comply with mercantile registration and other legal requirements.
